Perspective is everything – Start Where You Are

There are lots of changes we can make that come easily. There are some changes we can make once we have more information than we currently do. And there are some changes that cause us challenges in other areas. So how do we make those changes in ourselves so we can meet all the challenges we choose to meet?

In my book ‘Start Where You Are’, (now available in e-book version), we look at how we are able to shift our focus and energy in order to reach our goals and meet those challenges we either set for ourselves willingly or those that are thrust upon us. This is a positive book. Anything is possible, but the jump from where we are to where we want to be usually requires an initial ‘shifting’ of our perspective at a fundamental level. So before you start re-programming yourself, consider some of the following:

1. Some ‘shifts’ can be dangerous to your health. Not to be pessimistic at all but some people push themselves into programming with such forward thinking that they completely ignore who they are right now! This can work. It can also be very uncomfortable, or cause a level of shock to the system. In NLP (neuro-linguistic programming) there are all kinds of techniques that work to shift our modalities that make up our responses to certain stimuli. Using visual, auditory and kinaesthetic manipulations it becomes evident how truly pliable we humans are. This reality can cause a great deal of anxiety in a world where so many of us search our lives for an identity for ourselves and for others. This is not the kind of fundamental need that is easily disregarded.

2. There are many books written that look for our honest goals, those elusive goals that are genuinely ours and often ours alone. Those goals that, when achieved, sit comfortably with us as fundamental achievements that fulfill us at deep levels. The plea “I could get what I wanted if only I new what that was”.

Both the above point to a cognitive ‘peace’ we demand even as we change. And this paradox of human potential fills our lives with events, wishes, hopes, ambitions and inspiration. It also brings turmoil and disruption to our lives. When we ask who are we and what is life’s meaning, it is a good idea to perceive the answers from a perspective where change is not at odds with our concept of identification of who we are.
